Chapter Ten

Nyssa

One Week Before

“Oh my God, it’s so cute! And just think how awesome it’s going to look with my new boobs!” Mia beams as she pulls the bikini top from the rack.

I smile. “I don’t know how much you’re going to feel like lying on the beach after surgery, Mia. I’ve heard they’re pretty tender for a while.”

“Then I won’t touch them,” she says. “But I’m dying to have some nice tits, and finally I get to! It’s going to be great!”

My best friend squeals as she twirls around in the aisle. She doesn’t care that she’s twenty-six years old. Or that we’re in the middle of Target. She’s always been this way — I call it her child-like joy — and though seeing her joy does bring a smile to my face, I still shake my head.

“You’re nuts,” I tell her. “And people are looking over here anyway, so stop it!”

She laughs at my reproof.

“Who cares if they’re looking? Let them look,” she says. “They’re going to look a lot more when I have my new boobs, I can tell you that right now.”

“Mia!” I hiss, giggling. I’m only a couple months older than she is, but I act a lot older than that. Not that I am purposely trying to, but I see life a bit more seriously than she does.

The irony isn’t lost on me. I’m a massage therapist who specializes in stress reduction with my patients, yet between me and Mia, I’m the one who is chronically more stressed out.

I want to share her excitement right now, but even though I’m happy for her finally being able to get the surgery she’s been wanting for as long as I can remember, I am currently more stressed than I’ve ever been.

“Oh come on, they’re just looking because they’re jealous. It takes a special kind of person to appreciate something as simple as this bikini so much that they’re willing to dance right in the middle of the store for it. But, I don’t know, Nyssa, I’m just so fucking happy with life right now. I’m finally getting my career going, I’ve paid off my student loans, and above all, I’m finally getting my own set of knockers that’re going to knock your socks off!”

“I’m happy for you, you know I am,” I tell her, the same smile on my face. “I just hope this is going to work out okay. You know I’m not too excited about the prospect of doing this in Mexico.”

“Why’s that, again?” she asks, but her tone is sarcastic. “Oh, because it’s not American? Come on, Nyssa, it’s 2024. Now is not the time to have prejudice.”

She turns and starts walking up another aisle, and I follow her, halfway browsing, halfway trying to have the conversation I know we should have had long before now.

“I’m not prejudiced!” I say, a little louder than I intend. I glance around to make sure no one is watching us, and then I step closer to her as I lower my voice.
